Every True IMAX 1.43:1 Theatre in the World

There are only 63 screens in the world that can show a film in IMAX’s full expanded 1.43:1 ratio — the tallest commercial cinema format, used for sequences in everything from The Dark Knight through this year’s The Odyssey. That splits into 55 flat screens, shot on true IMAX 70mm film or IMAX-certified laser projection at 1.43:1, and 8 dome (OMNIMAX) theatres, which project the same 15-perf/70mm film gauge through a fisheye lens onto a hemispherical dome instead of a flat wall.

Methodology: We started from a working list of 264 large-format theatres worldwide. 201 of those are 70mm (2.20:1) or 35mm (2.39:1) presentation venues — a different, non-1.43 format — and are excluded below. Screen dimensions were corrected for a column-shift error in our source data (verified against IMAX Melbourne’s published 32m × 23m / 105ft × 75ft specs, and internally consistent across the rest of the set once corrected). Seat capacity is not included: we don’t have verified per-venue figures, and we’re not going to publish estimates as fact.
