MOTORINO PIZZA (349 E 12th St, East Village) — Italian / Pizza. Case study #9. Prices compared between Motorino’s own commission-free ordering menu and the same restaurant’s Uber Eats storefront.

For eight straight case studies, this series has found the same thing: order a restaurant’s food on Uber Eats and the menu prices are quietly higher than at the counter — 21% more at Mamoun’s Falafel, nearly 30% more at one restaurant we audited, before a single delivery fee is added. Motorino, the Neapolitan pizzeria on East 12th Street, is the exception that explains the rule. We priced all 49 of its matched dishes on Uber Eats against the restaurant’s own online menu. Every one was identical. The markup was zero.

The finding: same price, item for item

A Margherita is $21.75 on Motorino’s own site and $21.75 on Uber Eats. A Soppressata Piccante is $24.25 in both places. So is the Meatballs App at $16.50, the Fennel Salad at $16.00, the house tiramisu at $12.00, and a can of Coke at $4.00. Across pizzas, antipasti, the burger, drinks and dessert — 49 items in total — the Uber Eats list price matched the counter price to the penny. The basket that costs $815.05 on Motorino’s own menu costs $815.05 on Uber Eats. That is a markup of 0.0% — mean, median and mode all zero, with a range of zero to zero.

Why Motorino can do it

The answer is printed on Motorino’s own Uber Eats page: the listing is marked “Delivered by store staff.” Motorino runs its own delivery rather than handing orders to an Uber courier. On that arrangement a restaurant pays Uber a far smaller marketplace fee than the full commission — which can reach roughly 30% — charged when Uber also supplies the driver. In the restaurants where we found double-digit markups, that commission is the engine: the restaurant raises its in-app menu price to recover what the platform takes, and the customer pays it invisibly, on top of the delivery and service fees. Motorino has almost nothing to recover, so it passes almost nothing on. The 0% is not charity; it is what the food costs when the platform’s commission is small.

That is the whole point the series has been building toward. The markup is not a law of physics or a cost of putting food in a car. It is a pass-through of a commission — and when the commission is small or absent, so is the markup. Motorino proves the counter price and the delivery price can be the same. Most restaurants on Uber Eats choose, or are pushed, to make them different.

What this does and doesn’t measure

This audit compares the food price — what the restaurant sets for each dish — because that is the number the restaurant controls and the one the series exists to check. It is not the whole bill. A real Uber Eats order still adds a delivery fee, a service fee, tax and any tip at checkout, and those charges require a logged-in order to see; this automated audit does not place orders and did not capture them. But the food itself, the part a diner can compare dish for dish against the counter, carries no premium at Motorino. Where other restaurants stack a menu markup underneath those fees, here there is no markup to stack.

By the numbers

  • Dishes matched: 49 (same description and portion; combos, build-your-own and lunch-only personal pizzas excluded)
  • Markup: mean 0.0%, median 0.0%, range 0.0% to 0.0%
  • Basket: $815.05 on the counter menu, $815.05 on Uber Eats
  • Uber Eats fulfilment: “Delivered by store staff” (Motorino self-delivers)
  • For context, the commission a restaurant would need a menu markup of ~43% to fully recover at a 30% platform cut — Motorino marks up 0%

Method

On 15 July 2026, USA Times captured Motorino’s own prices from its first-party ordering menu (getsauce.com/order/motorino-east-village/menu), a commission-free platform whose menu page states that ordering there carries “no commissions,” so the online price equals the counter price. We then captured the Uber Eats list prices for the same location (349 E 12th St) from the storefront’s rendered Delivery & Pickup menu and cross-checked them against the page’s structured data; the two agreed item for item. We matched only dishes with the same description and portion and excluded combos, build-your-own items, the lunch-only personal-size pizzas, promotional “buy one get one” pricing, and anything out of stock on either menu. Delivery and service fees, tax and tip are added at a logged-in checkout and were not captured. Our analysis engine also reports a hypothetical “net at a 30% commission” figure; because Motorino self-delivers and does not pay that commission, that hypothetical does not describe this restaurant and is not used here. Prices can change and can vary by address; figures reflect the moment of capture.

Right of reply

USA Times contacted Motorino and Uber for comment and will update this report with any response. Motorino was asked to confirm that it self-delivers on Uber Eats and prices its app menu at counter parity; Uber was asked about its commission tiers for self-delivery versus platform-delivery restaurants and whether it tracks the gap between in-store and in-app prices.
